Matt Beaudouin-Lafon

Hey there, I’m a PhD Student advised by Haijun Xia in the Creativity Lab at the University of California San Diego.

I’m interested in developing tools that help people understand the medium in which they work. At UIST 2023, we presented Color Field, a visualization tool for color filters that helps novices “see” like experts (paper, video).

At CHI 2026 we presented Belidor, a UI specification language designed to highlight analogies between very different user interfaces (paper, video). My current work builds on Belidor to develop UI semantics that help designers better navigate the design space of user interfaces.

Before my PhD, I worked at Skydio on the Beacon user interface, 3D Scan, and Keyframe Mode.
